Webinar part 1 — Challenges in extracting nucleic acid for antimicrobial resistance monitoring

Sample types commonly used for monitoring antimicrobial resistance, such as wastewater and stool, present the challenge of extracting pure nucleic acid while ensuring complete representation of the microbial species and capturing the antimicrobial gene. In this webinar, we present methods and protocols for optimizing the informational content that can be extracted from even these most challenging samples.

Webinar part 2 — NGS in Antimicrobial Research: Tips & Tricks

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research uses many types of sample types, some of which present challenges when using NGS, particularly for getting the high-quality, useful and actionable insights. In this webinar, we will discuss:

  • Tips and tricks for NGS of difficult sample types (e.g., wastewater and stool)
  • The pros and cons of targeted vs metagenomic NGS approaches
  • Novel methods for AMR research

Webinar part 3 — AMR monitoring with nanoplate digital PCR

Digital PCR, with its accurate absolute quantification, provides a suitable method for specific and rapid monitoring of AMR genes in various sample types.
In this webinar, we demonstrate how dPCR based on nanoplates enables rapid profiling and identification of AMR genes in samples from wastewater, the human microbiome and other environmental samples. Guidance will be given on how to transition from real-time PCR to dPCR and how to establish the technology in a research lab.

About the speaker
Dr. Ronny Kellner, R&D Senior Scientist, dPCR
QIAGEN GmbH, Hilden, Germany
Dr. Ronny Kellner is an R&D Senior Scientist working on digital PCR assay development at QIAGEN. He completed his PhD in molecular plant–pathogen interactions at the MPI for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg and the Ruhr-University of Bochum, Germany. After several international projects in Germany and the UK focusing on microbiology, molecular biology and NGS data analysis, he joined QIAGEN in August 2020. Since then, he has been developing the digital PCR assay portfolio, including applications for microbial pathogen detection and NGS library quantification.
Dylan Barbera, Global Product Manager, UNGS Genotyping, GPM Genomics
QIAGEN Sciences, Inc., Germantown, USA
Dylan Barbera received his bachelors in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in Microbiology from The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Master of Science degree from Mount St. Mary's University in Biotechnology and Management. Dylan began his career in NGS in 2015 and joined QIAGEN in 2016 as a Quality Control Scientist. He currently serves as a Global Product Manager for QIAGEN's portfolio of Microbiology and Whole Genome Sequencing NGS products.
Dominic O'Neil, Director Microbiome Product Development, Microbiome Product Development
QIAGEN GmbH, Hilden, Germany
Dominic O'Neil has over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology industry. Before joining QIAGEN, he gained molecular biology expertise at several companies, including three years at the Whitehead/MIT Center for Genome Research in Cambridge, MA, where he participated in the completion of the initial draft of the human genome. Dominic joined Digene (which later became part of QIAGEN) in 2004 to work on new technology research and development, focusing in particular on sample preparation and diagnostic applications. In 2011, he joined the QIAGEN R&D group in Hilden to work on solutions for next-generation sequencing. Starting in 2015, he focused on microbiome extraction and associated workflows and now leads the R&D group as Director for Microbiome Product Development.
